چکیده

Many applications in computer vision and computer graphics require the definition of curves and surfaces. Implicit surfaces [7] are a popular choice for this because they are smooth, can be appropriately constrained by known geometry, and require no special treatment for topology changes. Given a scalar function f : Rd 7→ R, one can define a manifold S of dimension d− 1 wherever f(x) passes through a certain value (e.g., 0)

Generating Implicit Surfaces from Lidar Data

This paper is concerned with generating a continuous implicit representation of a robot’s workspace using sparse point cloud data. We adopt a Gaussian Process (GP) framework to model the underlying workspace surfaces and suggest a nonparametric formulation which allows us to capture the non-functional relation between ground plane and elevation that is not possible with, for example, terrain ma...

Using Langevin-Type Stochastic-Dynamical Particles for Sampling and Rendering Implicit Surfaces

We propose a new sampling method for 2D and 3D implicit surfaces. The method is based on a stochastic process defined by the Langevin equation with a Gaussian random-force term. Our Langevin equation describes a stochastic-dynamical particle, which develops in time confined around the sampled implicit surface with small width. Its numerically generated solutions can be easily moved onto the sur...

Variational Implicit Surfaces

We introduce a new method of creating smooth implicit surfaces of arbitrary manifold topology. These surfaces are described by specifying locations in 3D through which the surface should pass, and also identifying locations that are interior or exterior to the surface. A 3D implicit function is created from these constraints using a variational scattered data interpolation approach. We call the...

Curvature formulas for implicit curves and surfaces

Curvature formulas for implicit curves and surfaces are derived from the classical curvature formulas in Differential Geometry for parametric curves and surfaces. These closed formulas include curvature for implicit planar curves, curvature and torsion for implicit space curves, and mean and Gaussian curvature for implicit surfaces. Some extensions of these curvature formulas to higher dimensio...

Laser-Radar Data Fusion with Gaussian Process Implicit Surfaces

This work considers the problem of building high-fidelity 3D representations of the environment from sensor data acquired by mobile robots. Multi-sensor data fusion allows for more complete and accurate representations, and for more reliable perception, especially when different sensing modalities are used. In this paper, we propose a thorough experimental analysis of the performance of 3D surf...
